Steelers Bet on Darnell Washington With $42 Million Extension

Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Darnell Washington making a catch

The Pittsburgh Steelers have made their long-term plan for Darnell Washington clear. Pittsburgh signed the towering tight end to a four-year, $42 million contract extension after the best receiving season of his young career.

The deal reportedly includes $11.25 million guaranteed and keeps Washington in Pittsburgh through the 2030 season. It is a significant commitment to a player whose value extends well beyond a traditional receiving stat line.

Washington earned the extension with steady growth

Washington entered the NFL as Pittsburgh’s third-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft. His receiving production has increased in every season since then:

  • 2023: 7 receptions for 61 yards
  • 2024: 19 receptions for 200 yards and one touchdown
  • 2025: 31 receptions for 364 yards and one touchdown

His 2025 totals established career highs in catches and receiving yards. Washington averaged approximately 11.7 yards per reception, showing that his expanding role can create more than short-yardage gains.

The contract rewards a complete tight end

Washington’s receiving growth matters, but it does not fully explain the extension. At 6-foot-7, he gives Pittsburgh a rare combination of size, blocking ability and pass-game upside. He can align next to an offensive tackle, contribute to the running game and become a difficult matchup when released into a route.

That versatility gives the Steelers more options without changing personnel. Washington can help create a heavy formation built to run the football, then punish a defense that reacts too aggressively with play-action or a release into open space.

Why the timing makes sense for Pittsburgh

Washington was approaching the final year of his rookie contract. Extending him now allows Pittsburgh to secure a 24-year-old ascending player before another productive season could raise his price.

The four-year extension averages $10.5 million annually, placing Washington among the better-paid players at his position without requiring the Steelers to pay the very top of the tight-end market. The relatively modest reported guarantee also gives Pittsburgh flexibility while rewarding Washington for his development.

What comes next for Mount Washington?

The next step is turning Washington’s steady growth into a consistently larger offensive role. Through three regular seasons, he has totaled 57 receptions, 625 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Those numbers leave considerable room for growth, particularly near the goal line and on third down.

Pittsburgh is betting that Washington’s best football remains ahead of him. If his receiving production continues to rise while his blocking remains a defining strength, the $42 million extension could become one of the Steelers’ better long-term investments.
